Here is a very good article to read on social media and the classroom:
It talks about the classroom and some advice on when trying to integrate social media with in that environment. The tips are great:
- Let Down the Filters, Cautiously
- Add “Digital Citizenship” to the Curriculum
- Keep One Eye on Student Conduct, the Other on the Law
- Teach With Social Media
Another key issue is on how it is integrated. I’ve seen classrooms where students have twitter accounts and they update their progress on projects through tweets. Group projects are great at any level of learning and social media is a great tool to keep things organized and to keep all parties updated. In this sense, it’s not a teaching tool, but instead it is a learning tool.
