There’s something special going on with elearning and I think it is starting at Edmodo. First off, let me say that Edmodo is free. As soon as you go to the home page (http://www.edmodo.com) you will notice it looks a bit like facebook. Which is good because most people will be familiar with it. Here are a few things that it offers:
- Real-Time Messaging
- Privacy Control
- Assignments and Grading
- Store and Share Files
- Class Calendar
- Notifications and SMS
It’s very easy to use and I can see this being used for many teachers and many classes. It also looks that right now it may be a direct competitor with Moodle. Moodle is also free and I will be writing an article on that as well. The release of Moodle 2.0 is coming out soon!
Back to Edmodo. There are plenty of “next-gen” learning tools on the internet. They are:
However, these are all paid services. Some range from $4.99 a month and others much more. I don’t have any of these paid softwares so I cannot write a review or comment on them. However, by looking at all the websites and all of the “about” and “features” pages, I feel that Edmodo could very well be a good alternative (and it’s free).
I am familiar with Moodle and it offers many tools and it is open sourced. I’ll be honest, I love Moodle and I am excited for 2.0 but I am definitely willing to try Edmodo. It may not be as robust as Moodle but Edmodo has a focus on social networking where Moodle currently does not. Maybe they are meant for different age groups (I can see young students loving Edmodo due to the facebook look and feel) or maybe one day they can be used together in some way.
More research needs to be done but right now I am very excited about Edmodo and I can’t wait to see how it evolves.
